Nice thing about separate files is that when subs are corrected, you don't have to download the full movie again. And the ed2k hash of the movie stays the same, so there will be one well-shared copy instead of zillion poorly shared copies with different subs.

The subs are in VobSub (image) format. Converting to srt (text) is only possible with OCR. With good old SubRip it would take some manual labour, but maybe there are better programs available.
