I have it on dvd, but not sure in what the language. it has been so long since i ripped anything, i forgot how to do it.

Step 1 is to use DVD Decryptor in IFO mode to rip the movie from the DVD to VOB files on your hard drive.

Step 2 is to convert it to an XviD .avi, I find AutoGK the easiest for this. The default settings usually do a good job on a DVD source and there are a few adjustments you can make (via the advanced options and also Ctrl-F9) for special situations or additional tweaking.

AutoGK will do subs, you go to advanced options and check "Use external subs" and it will rip the subs in native DVD format, which most players can use and which can be further converted to .srt.

DVD Decryptor has always been pretty straightforward for me, only once has it failed me. Does .iso mode work, or files mode? Is it unable to physically read the DVD, or is it unable to decrypt it, or what?

it is an i/o error. I am trying to do iso image now and see. How about dvd shrink? I think I used that one before, but maybe not for ripping.
