Lick the Star
(Drama US 1998) b/w: 14 min. Director: Sofia Coppola, Sofia Coppola's self described "mood piece about the politics of high school" delves into the world of four cruel teenaged girls obsessed with the V.C. Andrews novel Flowers in the attic.
Born to a filmmaking family in 1971, Sofia Coppola made cinema history in 2003 by becoming the first American woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in the Best Director Category. Though she did not take home that statuette, Ms. Coppola was awarded the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for LOST IN TRANSLATION, which she wrote based on her own experiences visiting Japan in her early twenties.
Having acted in films during much of her youth, as a young adult Ms. Coppola explored other interests including photography and fashion design. While studying fine arts at the California Institute of the Arts, Ms. Coppola began to experiment with video shorts, which ultimately lead her to feature filmmaking. THE VIRGIN SUICIDES (2000), her first feature film, premiered in the Directors Fortnight of the 1999 Cannes Film Festival and established Ms. Coppola as one of the most talented new filmmakers in Hollywood.
