This was a prize-winning role for Sophia Loren - although it was a foreign-language film, she received the Oscar for Best Actress, as well as similar awards from Cannes and the British Film Academy. It's a grim story. The time is set in and around the fall of Italy to the Allies. A widow, Loren, and her daughter (Eleanora Brown) flee their home town, San Lorenzo, to escape the Allied bombing, leaving the family grocery business in the hands of her lover (Vallone).
They return to her native village, where she is attracted to a local farmer (Belmondo), but when the pressure of the Allied attack grows greater, the two women leave for Rome, which they believe will be safer. On the way they are attacked and raped …. A study of the loss of innocence, perhaps over-rated - the critical consensus seems to be that de Sica, one of the greatest of all Italian directors, almost - but not quite - succeeded in turning Loren into a professional actress. The story is by Alberto Moravia and de Sica originally cast the magnificent Anna Magnani as the mother (with Loren playing the daughter) but Magnani flatly refused to play Loren's mother ….

Anyone have any images of Eleanora Brown in this movie please post them here
