Hur Marie träffade Fredrik (1969) - Sweden

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064457/

Children's film about a lonely girl who makes friends with a boy named Fredrik who lives at a gardener's house.
"This is a children's movie concerning two kids who meet a kangaroo and a donkey, and drive a lot of go-carts. It contains nothing at all shocking or sensational in any way. "Hur Marie träffade Fredrik" was the first of only three films ever directed by Bo A. Vibenius, the other two being the ultra-sleazy "Thriller - A cruel picture" and the mind-bending "Breaking point".
Though obviously lacking grim and vengeful sex scenes, this film has a surrealist atmosphere similar to that of "Breaking point", though that can be explained by the lack of a script for reference during production. Another thing worth pointing out about this atrociously titled film is that it is super-heavy on product placement, so he incorporated many scenes in which the children promote certain brands of bread and other products in long, long talky sequences.A final thought: Can you imagine what terror went through the minds of the parents of the child actors in this film just a few years later, when Vibenius's subsequent productions arrived in their unflinching sensationsfilm glory? Oh, the horror, the horror...

AKA How Marie met Frederick

Thanks, starfish. There may be a lot of "product placement" but since this is 45 years old and Swedush, I'd bet not a lot of that matters in the U.S. now, especially since she's such a cutie. ;)

I didn't notice your comment until I went to make this post intending to point out the shirt!!

MARY POPPINS is a JUNKIE

Never seen it before and would never expect to see it in a 'children's' film. At least not one made in America.. ;)

Thanks starfish.. Looks like it will be pretty easy to follow without English subs.. Great find!

kev.

This is kinda cute - the girl certainly is. To be truthful, many times I turn the sound completely off when I watch a film without subtitles, and this one was easy to follow. Not a top movie but not bad.

Does Swedish sound that bad?

I understand some Swedish myself, but I've heard from some English-speaking people that it sounds funny.

It's not that other languages sound bad or funny to me, it's that I'm not smart enough to understand them. Without subtitles, I only get the emotional content. It's been 40 years since I took French, German, and Italian in school but I never used the languages and remember very little. I can often puzzle out what's being said in a film if I concentrate, but that's hard work and I still miss a lot. A film has to be very very good to make me want to invest that much energy in it, and a film that good usually has subtitles.

I know what you mean,Phuzz,if you can't hear what they're saying your brain can guess based on what's taking place, but sometimes the foreign words sound like something else, especially scandinavian.Actually, now i think of it,probably german is the most misleading to an english speaker, there are a few words that sound utterly filthy...
