A young British girl born and reared in India loses her neglectful parents in an earthquake. She is returned to England to live at her uncle's castle. Her uncle is very distant due to the loss of his wife ten years before.
Neglected once again, she begins exploring the estate and discovers a garden that has been locked and neglected. Aided by one of the servants' boys, she begins restoring the garden, and eventually discovers some other secrets of the manor.

So less words around that great movie?
It's a perfect story and I really like the way how the movie was made.
And a short time after I bought it, there was also a interesting video / music mix from Pogo available on YT (in the past he made lot of good remixes)...

Perhaps it has been remade too many times. Unlike The Turn of The Screw which has even more remakes, this doesn't have the kind of sexual tension that keeps the interest going.

This is one of my top 10 favorite movies ever. I'm glad it has a thread here. I love the combination of subtle gothic horror/magical realism. Misselwaithe manor is so beautifully realized. Her friendship with Martha, tickling her and teaching her to jump rope is cute. I loved it so much after revisiting it as an adult that I bought it and A Little Princess to read on my Kindle. Sadly, I didn't care for the changes in the 2020 remake like moving it to the 40s and
Spoiler:
burning down the manor.
but I guess it wasn't terrible otherwise. Haven't watched any other versions, but I've heard the 70s version is most faithful to the book.

I appreciate that she stands up in the 1993 version.
Also, I was surprised the actress that played Martha would've only been around 13 when this movie filmed(born 1979, movie was filmed I assume in 1992 since it released in 93.) I thought she was young, but not THAT young. And Kate was born in 82, so only a couple of years difference between the two.
