[REL] Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

I won't bother going into much detail since it's becoming very well known, having just won Golden Globes for Best Drama, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. I saw this in the cinema today and was blown away. Definitely recommend you see this in a theater (or a good home theater, once the DVD is available) for the full impact. This is not a typical FLM release, but the film follows the 18-year-old hero and his brother and a girl he befriends and falls in love with, in large part in flashbacks to when they were about 10 and about 14.The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes.
Just to be clear, this is really a "boy movie", even though two of the screenshots I posted were of the girl. In fact the biggest part of her role is actually in the 'present' after they turn 18.
The director, Danny Boyle, decided to have a lot of the dialogue in the slums of Mumbai be in Hindi (I assume) with subtitles that integrate into the movie very well. It adds a definite touch of realism.
Beware if you are sensitive about violence, this film received an R rating in the US due to the violence (some of it directed against children).
I normally leave DVD screeners alone, waiting until the DVD is available, but I couldn't wait to re-watch parts of this. I see some "property of" trailers but otherwise quite watchable.
