A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (1945)

In Brooklyn circa 1900, the Nolans manage to enjoy life on pennies despite great poverty and Papa's alcoholism. We come to know these people well through big and little troubles: Aunt Sissy's scandalous succession of "husbands"; the removal of the one tree visible from their tenement; and young Francie's desire to transfer to a better school...if irresponsible Papa can get his act together.

Peggy Ann Garner seems forgotten these days... (Partly due to her being DEAD.. ) She didn't really seem to get noticed until this film and by then she was around 12-13 years old... Cute girl, though.. :heart :heart

Thanks for the upgrade, starfish. I've always loved this film, partly due to the fact that my mom wouldn't watch it because she had read the book and didn't like that.. Made me feel like a bit of a rebel.

kev.

Ah, but that was from the "old days" when saying "Nothing special just a cute girl, it's a nice Sunday afternoon movie to chill out with 8)" was enough to kill all interest from the ones looking only for some skin. ;)

You know, I don't think I've ever watched this old classic before, but I will now. Thanks, starfish.

I'm always impressed by the quality available of some of these old movies,i think it was Ptg who mentioned that the old cinema cameras had a very high resolution,it gives us a large source of quality movies.

I have had a large blu-ray rip for a very long time now and thought I had mentioned it being on torrent? I try and give a heads up when I see them and I also noticed emuler has been mentioning them as well. We both have limited means to share big files and it is great we have other rippers here that can. :D
Sorry about that, everyone would of had a Starfish rip sooner.

Great movie :cool

It is like a taking a photograph with 35mm film and comparing it to taking the same picture with a digital camera. The film is more natural and has more detail and back then some films were shot with 70mm. As long as the film is stored well it is possible to re master an old film to digital with equal quality of a many of the best films out today. Only problem is that film can degrade so if it is not preserved the grandeur will be lost forever. There is currently a great effort ongoing with several of the studios to re master old film stock to digital in order to preserve them and to make them available for viewing again(our bonus). 8-)

A good example of a great transfer is I Want to Go to School (1959)

Off topic, but whenever B&W films are mentioned, I have to talk about Roman Holiday. What a classic. :D Blu-Ray rocks.
