Kansas con man Ryan O'Neal tries to make a living during the depression by selling Holy Bibles to those who have just lost loved ones, but gets somewhat conned himself when he must take a young Tatum O'Neal (Ryan's real-life daughter) to Missouri to live with her aunt after her mother passes away in this smart comedy that is literally carried by the younger O'Neal's Oscar-winning performance and Peter Bogdanovich's excellent direction.

The year is 1936. Orphaned Addie Loggins is left in the care of unethical travelling Bible salesman Moses Pray who may or may not be her father. En route to Addie's relatives, Moses learns that the 9-year-old is quite a handful: she smokes, cusses, and is almost as devious and manipulative as he is. They join forces as swindlers, working together so well that Addie is averse to breaking up the team -- which is one reason that she sabotages the romance between Moses and good-time gal Trixie Delight. Later, while attempting to square a 200 debt that Addie claims he owes her, Moses runs afoul of of a bootlegger and is nearly beaten to death by the criminal's twin-brother sheriff. Painfully pulling himself together, Moses gets Addie to her relatives, whereupon she adamantly refuses to leave his side.

Jodie Foster was in the tv series Paper Moon this is Tatum in this movie. I also have all of Jodie's episodes.

That was quick,Ptg,you must've read my post before i edited the jodie bit out.i didn't know about the tv series,but it must be said she plays that type of character so well.If your episodes are better than the youtube ones,it might be worth considering a future release.

A while back before HULU changed their streaming I grabbed majority of Jodie's early stuff. (Very few still left to be found by me). Unfortunately most of what is on youtube is the same as what was on HULU. At some point when I have time I will drop several more early stuff in her thread including this series. I need to gather it all to see what is still missing. if you are able to capture HULU there is a lot of old gems to be had
