This movie is based on the book "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Piccoult. This is from the back of the book: "Anna (Abigail Breslin) is not sick, but she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her older sister Kate (Sofia Vassilieva) can somehow fight leukemia that has plagued her since childhood. The product of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), Anna was conceived as a bone marrow match for Kate-a life role that she has never challenged . . . until now. Like most teenagers, Anna is beginning to question who she truly is. But unlike most teenagers, she has always been defined in terms of her sister-and so Anna makes a decision that for most would be unthinkable, a decision that will tear her family apart and have perhaps fatal consequences for her sister she loves.

Story behind (2008)

Stop the presses! The Fanning sisters — yes, both Dakota and Elle — have dropped out of the film adaptation of Jodi Picoult's novel My Sister's Keeper. Now Abigail Breslin will play the role of Anna (previously given to Elle), the girl who sues her parents for medical emancipation. Sofia Vassilieva is in talks to take Dakota's role of Kate, Anna's sick older sister.
According to Variety, "Sources said Dakota Fanning balked at a request that she shave her head for the role and both sisters withdrew abruptly."
Hooray for Abigail Breslin! There was some uneasiness about the Fannings playing these sisters in the first place, and now, well, Dakota can keep her hair and we can see Breslin take this role and run with it. This project, which is dear to many hearts due to the sentimental subject matter, deserves good casting choices.

Looks interesting, will look forward to it. IMDB says it's been completed.

I have no problem with Abigail in for Elle, I am a fan of them both. Dakota would have been nice, but I can see why with her accelerating film career she would refuse to shave her head. Sofia Vassilieva has no film career to speak of yet, and probably wants one, so would be more amenable.

Thanks willow & ptg!

I saw this in the theaters, and it pretty much worked for me! Having worked in a local children's cancer center for five years, it hit home..

While [unfortunately] containing a lot of the 'Hollywood gloss' [it was, after all, made to be 'entertainment'] it showed some of the pain and anguish families do go through dealing with terminal illness..

Abigail and Sophia were lovely! :heart

kev.
