Opie's friend Arnold is throwing a birthday party - music, dancing, and dates. Opie works up his courage and asks Mary Alice Carter to the party and she accepts, though she really wants Fred Simpson to take her. Going to the party with Mary Alice, who he's been sweet on since first grade, is a very big deal for Opie - he even gets a new suit. Later, Fred asks Mary Alice to the party and she dumps Opie. After that, he's crushed and doesn't want to go but his dad convinces him he should go anyway.

Many thanks for this one, phuzzy...

I'm not ashamed to admit I still watch The Andy Griffith Show every so often to get that old nostalgic warm-'phuzzy' feeling... I think it still holds an innocent charm that most of the modern shows have lost..

What's scary is I'm very close to Opie's age and this is kinda the way things were when I was going through the ordeals of my "first love" days so I can identify with him. This episode struck my fancy so I figured I'd share it.
