No reason to have suspected it was RealVideo, I've never seen an actual AVI using that codec (though I guess it's theoretically possible). In fact the file is an .mkv (Matroska) container which someone misnamed as an AVI. Which is wrong and misleading if you don't have the tools and knowledge to figure it out.
Everyone should get a program such as mediainfo:
http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/
It will tell you lots of useful information about a movie or music file, as a popup if you want it to. Container format, codec, bitrates, etc. Will even point you at a website where you can get the codec, if it's one you don't have. (Though for the Real4 codec it takes you to the official Real.com site rather than RealAlternative. Real.com has a bad enough track record that you should stay away from them.)
