Pillowbaker, I watched it last night with your subtitles. It was all logical to me and your subs look pretty professional.
When you're not too nervous, let me know.
I guess it could be: "If you're not afraid..."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I kicked myself when I saw that typo!
SubtitleEdit also has a spell check. ;)

Spoiler:

31
00:03:53,332 --> 00:03:55,280
Let's play when we get
to the city.

32
00:03:56,067 --> 00:03:57,084
Okay.

33
00:03:58,778 --> 00:03:59,958
But.

34
00:04:00,860 --> 00:04:02,913
There is no city, is there?

Two whisper passes approximated this:

Давай поиграем в города?

Давай.

Опа!

Нет такого города.

This area came out awkward no matter what I tried. I think I captured the general meaning, but I still had trouble wording it, and I am still not satisfied with it. I have a feeling I am missing something here. This is one of those rare areas where whisper's auto-translate option gave better results, which I based my final wording on. Something to the effect of, "let's play together once we get to our new hometown. - It's not much of a town/it's quite a bit different from home."
I just started watching the film and as a native speaker I think I can help.
"поиграем в города" mean to play with words (In this case little sister is bored on the trip as I can assume).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_chain
https://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%93%D0 ... %80%D0%B0)
"Опа!" - Literally has been pronounced dirty word "Жопа" (ass) but the first letter "Ж" was muted.
"Нет такого города." - little sister says that there is no one city with such name Жопа.
Elder sister sais something like look around, pointing at the sad scenery out of the window. A hinterland, backwoods in bad sense often called as "Жопа" in russian.

Many thanks for your corrections, Sancho. Very kind of you to drop in and assist like this. Honestly, I feel these subs certainly still need more more work. Your correction here makes a lot of sense!

So, it should look something like this:

Anya: Let's play cities word-chain.
Sonya: ASSville!
Anya: There is no city called that, is there?
Sonya: Just look out the window.

Other option may be "Shit Towne", a phrase which was more widely used a couple decades ago, which you can hear all about in the song by band Live.

Please feel free to drop in any other corrections, as long as it doesn't inconvenience you, and I will implement them quickly. I am particularly interested in the brief conversation at the very end of the movie, which I had to guess on.

Glad to help!

Trying to continue:
(Kukolnik.2022.WEB-DL.1080p.srt
my thoughts and suggestions)
Spoiler:

56
00:05:22,173 --> 00:05:24,171
So everyone suffers because of one thing?

When everyone suffers because of one person?

57
00:05:24,196 --> 00:05:26,336
Watch your mouth, unless you catch it, too.

Watch your mouth or you'll get it!
right as Night457 noticed! :)

63
00:06:06,227 --> 00:06:08,594
We'll sweeten her back up.

I think phrase above catch the point well. In original meaning: We'll give her a raw milk (In the villages, it is customary to consider raw milk as healthy food, especially for kids).

66
00:06:42,783 --> 00:06:44,945
We still need hot water and heat.

If you'll need hot water - heat it in the bucket.

79
00:07:54,522 --> 00:07:57,686
My name is Tyoma.
This is Babyor, and Malych

Bobyor (Variant is Beaver. Yes, writing Bobyor, pronouncing Babyor).
Malysh (Kid, Baby, Little Guy might be a variants for the nickname)

92
00:08:39,126 --> 00:08:40,866
Yeah, I'm an asshole.

There is hard to me to catch the proper English phrase
"who you think you are, the darest one?"
"who you think you are, the boldest one?"
Point is around here :)

103
00:09:10,144 --> 00:09:12,304
And they tried to rape.

and also tried to rape.

110
00:09:36,062 --> 00:09:38,139
I'd rather kiss a goat's ass.

I'd rather kiss a stinky goat.

115
00:10:04,312 --> 00:10:06,257
Tymoa, he might come after her.

Tyoma, the olders will finds out and kill us.
Idk slang form for the "parents" in Eglish that school kids may used.
And yes, there is misspelled name also.

139
00:12:26,871 --> 00:12:30,300
- Sonya...
- What can I say? It's a hole.

- Sonya...
- What can I say? It's a shithole.

149
00:13:26,950 --> 00:13:29,633
Redhead bitch

// They wrote down less "dirtier" word than bitch. Word on the table is sort of fool or dummy

159
00:14:33,255 --> 00:14:35,177
Redhead bitch.

Same. "Foolish redhead" maybe? I don't know English well to picking right words for certain situations. Bitch - not bad analogue but I think we need a word that every kid can say without hearing "Watch your language!" :)

180
00:18:20,437 --> 00:18:21,644
To practice with.
А чучело зачем?
Тренироваться.
Страшила - хороший друг.

Some of the translation options hinted that Yura actually used his scarecrow for practice socially, that is, for practice talking to people. But I couldn't be sure. It would have been a funny thing to admit to a girl that you managed to convince to climb inside your secret fort.
I think "тренироваться" in that case mean to practice fighting with it, sort of playing with wooden swords or sticks, like Sonya successfully demonstrated earlier and Yura commented "You're doing great".
"He makes a good friend." - I think it's Yura's little irony about himself. As I can see he has no friends.

226
00:22:29,463 --> 00:22:30,848
Is it a prank?

Is it a joke?

230
00:22:51,077 --> 00:22:53,919
If Mom finds out, it'll be
the end of you and me.

Overall meaning - "We'll be screwed".
IKD if is there any english phrases with the "end" in this case. Just my thoughts.
Comments #2
Spoiler:

281
00:26:55,842 --> 00:26:58,378
Hey, white-head!
Two-year-old!

"Two-year-old!" - very fun mishearing )
He said "Отвали от неё" - "Back off from her!"

298
00:28:08,612 --> 00:28:11,417
His stories kinda freak me out.

// Additional detail. Всякая фигня мерещится - sort of apparition, she sees weird things. In other words, not only did she hear the story and get scared, but she got apparitions. Sorry for bad English

304
00:28:23,397 --> 00:28:26,201
When you're not too nervous, let me know.

If he'll bother you, just let me know.
Idk good slang variants but "bother" seems close to it.

387
00:37:43,562 --> 00:37:46,168
Is there a kiss for being so quick?

// I think overall meaning is good.
But, he's phrase sound in official way in that moment, just as variation of a slang.
"Provide a kiss for promptliness" or something like that might be great I think.

414
00:40:08,826 --> 00:40:13,037
- We weren't aware of that.
- First-rate moonshine can strip the walls.

// They actually aware of that.
- That you tell us! (ironically, like, "cool story, we know that")
"strip the walls" - wrong. "Крышу уносит". Крыша - head, mind. He's describing the effects of the moonshine in slang. Idk English phrases, so suggest your variants.

415
00:40:13,062 --> 00:40:15,980
Remember when you drank some
and you puked on your Aunt Lena?

// it's hard to make out what he said without russian subs. I don't hear any "puke", but I hear that Tyoma was tried to kiss aunt Lena when he was drunk.

426
00:40:48,265 --> 00:40:51,280
Quit standing around.
C'mon, kill it!

Quit standing around.
C'mon, hit harder!

426.5
00:40:56
Dang!

427
00:41:00,950 --> 00:41:02,544
- Shit!
- Hit harder!

// Idk if firefighting process is describing by "kill it", but if so, it's okay

434
00:41:19,869 --> 00:41:21,124
Really.

He's actually saying hello (Здрасьте, shorten version of Здравствуйте, very common in using) trying to be polite in that awkward situation :)

447
00:41:49,262 --> 00:41:51,387
There's something crazy going on.

There's something going wrong with Anya.

481
00:44:07,635 --> 00:44:09,243
You're really fucked up.

// In original meaning he's lost his mind
You're really crazy.

502
00:45:32,411 --> 00:45:35,645
Your friend.
Is she from the abandoned house?

Your friend.
Is he from the abandoned house?

525
00:54:08,685 --> 00:54:10,832
You AND Sonya took it.

Это Соня её украла - Sonya took it.

542
00:55:20,592 --> 00:55:22,572
I'll make arrangements with her mom,
and then we'll go.

// Mom said that Sonya need to make arrangements by himself and go to the city alone

574
00:58:58,351 --> 00:59:01,168
What did you do? Arnilov?

What is going on? Arnilov?

576
00:59:08,000 --> 00:59:10,770
Hey, I didn't know they hit you.

Hey, I didn't know they beat you up.

612
01:02:37,779 --> 01:02:39,310
Where should we look?

Where's it gone?

613
01:02:39,419 --> 01:02:41,013
Try behind the box.

Look behind the box.

620.5
01:03:59
Мы живы - We're alive.

622
01:04:06,301 --> 01:04:07,879
We'll make a new one.

I'll make a new one.

628
01:04:59,571 --> 01:05:00,608
We're too late?

We're too late.

631
01:05:07,709 --> 01:05:09,797
What's he really afraid of?

// Sonya said "Чего эта тварь боится?"
Тварь - it may sound like a 1) "creature" with negative connotation; 2) "monster"
Therefore a variant like:
What's this monster really afraid of?

633
01:05:11,846 --> 01:05:13,863
How would we find that out?

Maybe he's afraid of being found out.
// Yura makes an assumption what exactly this puppeteer can afraid of. He supposed that maybe the monster might be scared from being recognized / found out

647
01:08:37,750 --> 01:08:38,984
Strings.

Dang. (Блин)

649
01:09:42,946 --> 01:09:47,895
Shit, I thought this was it.
Are you okay?

Shit, I was started thinking we're screwed.
Are you okay?
// Help me with English. Sonya said that already started thinking they were screwed, but seeing her sister relaxed a bit. Her line goes something like that way.

651
01:09:57,760 --> 01:10:01,000
You won't stop us from playing.

// Wrong. Meaning is "you're interrupting me playing with it". Not right now but in overall sense.

678
01:14:15,001 --> 01:14:17,976
I'm sorry! Run, please!

// Wrong.
Да проснись ты! Беги, пожалуйста!
Sonya begging to her sister that she have to immediately wake up and ran away.

684.5
01:15:02
Get off!

685
01:15:05,047 --> 01:15:06,547
Get off!

Help!

707
01:17:01,487 --> 01:17:04,335
Tie it down!

// Sonya said that they need to tie strings to the shelfs

743
01:21:14,430 --> 01:21:18,750
If I drink this shit again,
I'll get better faster?

I don't like word shit in this case. That word is too rude for such a child. Filth, crap or something would be better. More kiddish-word needed.

746
01:21:38,649 --> 01:21:42,729
So who has a better chance?
Arnilov or Yura?

So who has a better chance?
Tyoma or Yura?

754
01:22:09,953 --> 01:22:12,045
Think we can go for another hunt?

// Just thoughts. Another one вылазка - sortie? foray? outing? Maybe hunt good too but for me hunt sounds little weird. Tyoma didn't say nothing about actually hunting.
Think we can go for another (вылазка) outing?

755
01:22:12,070 --> 01:22:14,277
And fight every ghost in town.

// Wrong. Sonya is less daring for such new adventures and says she flinches at every rustle now.
"Я и так от каждого шороха вздрагиваю" - actually has been said. Don't know how to translate correct in English.

That's all.

As for the rude words. I don't really think that translation will be completely wrong with using words like fuck, bitch or asshole. In that movie it's just film studio politic, like a movie for the kids and they just avoiding very rude words etc, but I don't doubt that real high school kids could swear worse. So it is translator's decisions maybe. And I am not a translator at all.
What especially seems innatural for me in current subs in that context - it using shit-word by little girl Anya.
She has the role of a harmless little girl and even when she try to be rude, she do it in a very childish way, using simple words.

P.S. Beaver and Baby - the most silent ghosts in movies I've ever seen [facepalm] :D Dummy roles, they are just filling the space in the frame. Omg.
fix #3
Deleted the prank/joke edit. Prank seems to be ok word as a "practical joke". My mistake, sorry, didn't know that word well. In russian word "prank" are using too, but slightlly in other way. It confused me.

I think it's good!
As I learn today, "shithole" is a good adaptation to "Жопа" in location meaning :) , so maybe it can be a variant too.
If a word-chain game isn't that popular as it is in ex-USSR countries, then Assvile as an adaptation thing is very good.
If people around world on long trips doing such games, than we can just put ass word as it is.

You're corrections are great, Sancho. Thank you for your continued contribution.

And you're correct, "shithole" is indeed a word that is used to refer to some towns and locations. One of my favorite variations of this expression came from the movie "The Air Up There" with Kevin Bacon, "that town's hardly worth shitting on."

I am incorporating ALL of your corrections and only tweaking what I need to make the English sound right, although I may have to keep "We'll sweeten her back up." But I still very much appreciate being able to understand what is actually being said, which can help me come up with a closer phrase in English.

Your corrections for the "redhead insults" were especially apt. The way you explained it made perfect sense, particularly when you said "we need a word that every kid can say without hearing 'Watch your language!' " :D

I will continue revising the subtitles and, once you're finished with the movie, I'll repost them!

I've finished and updated the post.
Sorry for bad English. All fixes is under discussion, of course.

And you guys make a great work, creating subtitles from nothing :) Amazing, a lot of work and effort.

They discuss another outing as another one "adventure". But not seriously as I can suppose, just chatting.
I dunno why they used Tyoma's surname suddenly at the part in the school and then the end. I was confused at first.
In the school a teacher naming every kid using surnames, like in official way. It's okay. But in the end Anya said "Tyoma", not "Arnilov"

As for the main object of this lore, grandmother's "secret stash". :D
You maybe wrong with word "stash" to begin with :)
The guys mentioned the moonshine stuff as "запасы". This is not secret place at all, it's just a certain amount of stuff, a stockpile.

Once again, I thank you whole-heartedly for your work, Sancho. You obviously spent some time going through and correcting my errors. Quite a thorough list! :D :mrgreen:

I am implementing your fixes now. Most of them I can copy/paste right in; the English you used in most of your corrections was just fine.

Sorry about the poor word choices for the kids and especially Anya. I am not much of a translator myself, and honestly, I probably could have assumed from the tone of the movie that the more vulgar words were not being said by anyone. Most of them were offered by the auto-translators as substitutes.

I laughed at your description of "Beaver and Baby." Wish I could call them that in the subs!

Are there any movies for which you would like English or Russian subs made?

One word has been said - Жопа. And even that one was muted, although it's not profanity, it's just a rude word.

I was waiting ENG subs for Nie bede cie kochac (1974), but it already is. Thanks.

Update. Fixed one thing above.
