A series of strange child disappearances have left the rural town of Miles in a state of disbelief. A sick Mother Sonya, fears unspeakable evil will soon snatch her 11 year old daughter Violett, from her sight.
Let me start off by thanking ghost for, once again, bringing this film [and all his splendid contributions] to FLM. Seriously.
(Now; NOT so seriously: ) A movie that would have surely slipped through the bounds of anonymity and disappeared from the thoughts of humanity had it not been posted here..
Has anyone else seen this movie yet? Yea's or Nay's?
I'll go ahead and post my thoughts, not necessarily needed, but I like to comment on a movie that I've seen whilst it's still fresh on my mind. (If, for nothing else, when I look back on this post in the future, it helps me remember my immediate reactions to the film.) And from my above comments, you can probably tell which direction I'm going with this...
Fading quietly into obscurity is probably what this 'Psychological Drama' deserves as it touches on a ton of cliches that tend to gnaw at my core... (Which I'll 'Spoiler' for those that like to watch their movies 'untainted'. )
Spoiler:
'Gnawing Cliches' that bug me personally:
*Quiet, sulky main character that obviously has some past trauma they are dealing with.
*Characters they interact with, that no one else comments on.
*Almost unendingly long scenes, drawn out for dramatic tension that might or might NOT be a clue to whatever mystery the film is trying to purport..
*Repetition of certain scenes to make sure we understand; "Hey! This might or might NOT be important!"
*Flashbacks to give some explanation or reasoning behind the main characters behavior.
*A fake 'obvious' twist to make you question your original assessment of what was going on that you held pretty much from the beginning of the movie.
...ad nauseam...
*All this to show, ultimately, the main character [through whose eyes we are pretty much viewing the movie] is [!SURPRISE!] 'unreliable'..
Violett's character was important, but not really 'fleshed out' as the movie was REALLY about the mother. And boy, was the mother messed up. To the point where you can pretty much draw the [correct] conclusion.. WAIT!! I'm getting into my 'annoying cliches' that I already 'Spoilered'..
Anyway, the film is moody, haunting, beautifully shot [at times], moody, depressing, meandering, never funny, moody, draaawnn out [1 hour, 41 mins?? HOLY FREJOLIES!! It felt like well over 2 hours ]; oh, did I mention it was 'moody'?
I've not seen the short film ' An Artist's Curse' [which is what? The inspiration for the film or just a clip? It's [REL] date is being touted '2024'; a year AFTER this movie ] but I'm of the opinion that it probably should have stayed a short and NOT been drawn out to a full-length motion picture. It's probably tighter and more impactive as such.
A little bright spot was Mani Shanks** who plays 'Sonya' [the mother's character as a child]. She was expressive, and believable during the short time she was onscreen.

Much more-so than the actress [ Valentina Blagojevic ], who played the titular character 'Violett'. (Granted Violett's character was limited with minimal dialogue and repeated shots and collages of her spending time with mad momma and gazing pensively at the camera.. )
All in all; I'm glad I saw this movie: I can say 'I took one for the team'.
kev.
**(OH! Little Mani Shanks is in a new film [by the director of THIS movie {shiver}] called ' Shed'. In 'Post Production' and [despite the director] looks promising: )
