NIGHT457 do you know the name of the second book in English? Or how many in total there are?
"Mardie to the Rescue"
Total: 6? 3?

1 [Mischievous Meg (American translation, differs dramatically from:)
Mardie (British translation, Alt. title: Mardie’s Adventures)]
2 [Mardie to the Rescue (only released in Britain)]
3 [The Runaway Sleigh Ride]

Wikipedia says there are SIX Madicken books (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madicken), but does not appear to list them. "Mischievous Meg" and "Mardie" are the American vs. British translations of the first book. "Mardie to the Rescue" is the sequel. "The Runaway Sleigh Ride" is an oversized picture book. I have not seen anything for three more books, which at the very least do not appear to have English translations. Maybe a Swedish site will confirm their existence.

Dang, that attention to detail is admirable! And, dang, that book is expensive, but I really hope to buy it eventually.

No kidding, I choked looking at the current prices for the few copies available. (Amazon and eBay.) All the smaller online booksellers I found only say Out of Stock.

I came up with all 6 books, if you count the two translations of the first book as two. The missing two books are:
"När Lisabet pillade in en ärta i näsan" publication date 1991
"Jullov är ett bra påhitt, sa Madicken" publication date 1993

I am guessing that they are picture books that recycle a single event from one of the novels, like "The Runaway Sleigh Ride".

BOOKS

First book in English "Mardie" available as PDF to "borrow" for free: https://archive.org/details/mardie00lin ... 2/mode/2up

(If I could have easily downloaded it, I would have.)

First book in German "Madita" available as PDF on eMule:

German book direct-download: https://pixeldrain.com/u/ScT4dbcW

Second book in English "Mardie to the Rescue" scanned from my copy. Since it is 26 times the size of the German PDF of the first book, clearly I overdid the scan resolution of this text-and-line-drawings book! I am not scanning it again to make it smaller.

English 2nd book direct-download: https://pixeldrain.com/u/KHLEJJ3U

Personally I find reading PDFs a pain; they are simply a convenient way to store multiple images in a single file. For those interested, here in a ZIP file are the individual JPEG scans that I used to create the PDF:

Here's the English second book as direct download in a significantly smaller filesize:

I also found one called Titta, Madicken, det snöar! (Look, Madicken, it's snowing!), another picture book with a bit of text:

WOW!!!!! Thank you!!!!! I wish I had known of this site long ago.

Their "Mardie to the Rescue" is a different edition but the same translator and with the same illustrations. This site is fantastic. There are many Lindgren books there. The first book in English is available as a PDF under the title "Mardies Adventures". https://annas-archive.org/md5/a19a96f3c ... c39e6e43f0

Note: it is also available as an epub with images unreadable in their viewer: it looks like the book was soaking in a rainbarrel for a month! Truly bizarre choice for an upload. See the spoiler for a sample image. The PDF is perfectly readable and does NOT have this problem.
Avoid the epub version of "Mardies Adventures"

For the books I downloaded, I used the links that did not require a login and were supposedly slow. Two links took one second each, and another one took a few minutes.

Thank you so much, Night457 and SATA6Gbs. You guys are saviors.

I really appreciate that they are dedicated to accuracy to the books. A writer doesn't add these small little details just for the hell of, they are always trying to convey some feeling/emotion. I get that when you adapt something you want to feel like it is also your piece of art in some way, or somehow has your DNA in it, but I will always prefer to stay as close to the books as possible WHEN possible.

Another line I appreciate is when Madicken goes to visit Abbe on Christmas eve she asks, "Will your parents get you lots of presents?" and Abe replies, "As long as there is life, there's hope." obviously, he's saying it in a kind of sarcastic way, because he knows his parents are poor, but just a nice little line of dialogue.

The books also have my favorite moment, when Madicken asks to hold Abe's hand so she can "See better" when they're going to visit the ghost.

Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite series ever, and my favorite part of the films is when they are just chilling in the Shire, the Madicken/Madita/Mardie/Meg is like if the hobbits never left the Shire, just nice comfort reading/watching, but still with some substance that you can appreciate as an adult.

It also got me interested in Sweden and Sweden cinema in general, a lot of the films I have gravitated toward here have been from there, or nearby.

Anyway, the main purpose of my post was to thank you all, I just wanted to add a little more to it so it wasn't just a sentence.

That is because physical contact increases her "psychic" connection and allows her to see through his eyes as well. :P

The recent posts about the book translation differences and links to downloads have been elating. I love these as much as I love a free, fun, easy-to-watch movie link!

This reminds me, I have long finished the Mariken (whose name I have mistakenly swapped with Madicken in the past) novel. I think mgray, if you enjoy this light reading material, you might enjoy Mariken. I'll get on making final revisions.

So about Madicken, I see two different books in English. How many separate books are there in Madicken originally?

Thinking about the Madicken novels reminded me of Mariken and I wanted to ask you about it! I did not dare start on the previous shared chapters because I would have been very annoyed if the translation was left unfinished: better not to read any at all if I would just have to live with the disappointment of it left hanging. Mgray is likely to get around to reading any book before I do, but *I* am definitely still interested.

The answer seems to be "5": 2 Swedish novels with one having two translations; and 3 picture books.
Mischievous Meg [American translation of Madicken, 1960]
Mardie (AKA Mardie's Adventures) [British translation of Madicken, 1960]
Mardie to the Rescue [British translation of Madicken och Junibackens Pims, 1976]
"The Runaway Sleigh Ride" [English translation of "Titta, Madicken, det snöar!" 1983]
"När Lisabet pillade in en ärta i näsan" [publication date 1991, no English version]
"Jullov är ett bra påhitt, sa Madicken" [publication date 1993, no English version]

Whether Lindgren wrote & edited new text herself for the picture books I do not know. She may have simply granted permission for the publisher to edit her story segments to accompany the new illustrations. But I am not absolutely sure: after the very first film adaptation of her works disappointed her, she insisted on writing the scripts herself and having right of approval over the directors! Those were her conditions for giving permission to adapt them to film, and she maintained control through her lifetime.
