On Friday I saw the new movie "Rango" in the theater. Its only small relevance to FLM is Abigail Breslin, in a voice only role. It did get me thinking about Westerns, though, and reminded me of Big City, which I had never watched (waiting for subs). Coincidentally just a couple of weeks ago I'd finally come across English subs. :dance

So I watched it yesterday. Excellent film! I will warn you there are some things which are social commentary, much of it directed at the US (or Canada). But it all works as a good story within the historical context of the film.

Here's a review from IMDB, from some guy who calls himself "popdrome" :think
French kids play Cowboys and Indians, and they mean it!
This is an odd one. All throughout France, Europe and the world this little film has been misunderstood. Kids play like adults in America's 19th century wild west, and they play it with a twist. There's romance, war, racism, corruption, torture and death, which, although mildly depicted in (in most cases) a humorous way, is not quite standard family flick material. Not even in France.

But there are more layers. You know, this is also a satire on how idiotic grown-ups are, a satire of Hollywood westerns, and it's even a musical! The director and producers took great risks, and from this point of view, this is certainly interesting cinema. The children play their roles quite sincerely, there's little cheesiness, and the humor is subtle enough for adults to be appreciated. It has been shot in Bulgaria (!?). Go see it if you get the chance, you're in for a surprise.

I just watched this movie and really enjoyed it. I highly recommend it.

Thanks Ghost for posting it and thanks FLL for the subtitles

The "social commentary" is quite sharp at times but easier to take because of the humor with which it is presented. I am glad I waited to watch it until I got the subtitles. It looked interesting and I downloaded it before FLL put the subtitle file up.

I see that Amazon in France has 2 DVD versions of this, but apparently neither version has English subtitles. :(

Apparently this film has already been broadcast in HD. I hope someday soon we will get it.
