As an orphan, young José (<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0128161/">Garry Cadenat</a>) is sent to live with his grandmother on a sugar cane plantation in a village in Martinique.
Writer-director Euzhan Palcy’s realistic and unsentimental depiction of 1930s Martinique portrays the hardships the villagers endure cutting sugar cane to survive, as well as Jose’s grandmother’s determination to make a better life for her grandson. Because of his grandmother’s strong will and encouragement, José remains in school, where his exemplary performance earns him a scholarship at a top school in Fort-de-France. However, the small family’s hardships continue as José tries to rise above his humble station in life.
This film received a César Award for Best First Work.
