Really? I selected Latvian to English. Good old auto-detect must've kicked in and changed it.

Looked all over the place for some indication of an eventual bluray release but found nothing. Festival circuit films like this one often take several years to appear on disc. Reasonably good chance it'll come with English subs though. An ad I saw for a British screening of the movie said it would be subtitled in English, so the studio clearly does have them.

I'll check for a BD of this title every so often, like I do with certain others, and post it here when I find one. :D

I've checked the subs. First of all I have to say that Deadman's translation is unbelievably good! If Google Translate was used, Deadman must have spent days fixing all the nonsense. Here are the corrections I made:
Spoiler:

-- Paula considers herself Russian.
-- Ln Riga most people speak Russian.
+- Paula considered her Russian.
+- In Riga most people speak Russian.

-Aunt Aija, she's Russian!
+Aunt Aija - a Russian!

-I'm not speaking mostly Russian.
+I'm principally not speaking Russian.

-He looked like a professor.
+He looked like a professional.

-I won't talk about it anymore. Okay?
+Promise you won't talk about it anymore. Okay?

-I'll bet he's abnormal.
+I'll bet he's abnormal too.

-Maya, your parents
+Maija, did your parents

-- Ls your mother getting married again?
+- Will your mother marry again?

-Because everything is changing. Soon you'll
-be able to buy anything from stores again.
+Because everything is changing. Soon there'll
+be nothing to buy from stores anymore.

-and two cans of coffee, Elitake.
+and two cans of coffee, my dear Elita.

-- What vintage is that?
-- It's not wine.
+- Do you have sausages?
+- No.

-Call me when the wine comes in.
+Call me when sausages come in.

-I got ten eggs, oatmeal, five
-cakes, five loaves of bread.
+I'd like ten eggs, oatmeal, five
+loaves of white bread, five loaves
+of black bread.

-Goodbye.
+Hello.

-taken the capitol yet?
+captured the exhibitionist yet?

-We'll take it. I'm sure we will.
+We'll capture him. I'm sure we will.

-You're not like a killer.

-Where young men are staging an organized
-protest against the Soviet army.

+recruiting Latvian young men in the Soviet army.

-- They're criminals who do harmless stuff.
+- They do unlawful, but good things.

-- Do you have any brothers of fighting age?
+- Do you have any military-aged brothers?

-News spreads quickly on the ground.
+News spreads quickly in the countryside.

-We have some time, Aija Karlovna...

-Maija, the baby!
+Maija, dear!

-Maybe they don't grow up big and
-strong, unless I fight for freedom.

Some of what I did involved taking awkward phrasing and making it sound more natural. For instance

I'm principally not speaking Russian.

isn't how someone would probably put it. So I wrote I'm not speaking mostly Russian, to indicate Maija didn't want to spend the visit speaking Russian most of the time.

Thanks so much for your corrections lara! Sometimes there's just no substitute for human translation. :D

It's my poor English... What the girl actually means is that she does not speak any Russian as a protest. I guess you would say "not speaking Russian on principle"?

Okay, yeah. You'd say "I don't speak Russian on principle." Is that also what Paula meant talking to Jonas?

For online translations, usually you obtain better results with https://www.deepl.com/en/translator (that takes the context into account).

Apparently this film is proposed with English subtitles

Yeah, I noticed some of the festival screenings advertised English subs. That's why I figured the eventual bluray release should have them.

DeepL looks interesting. It still mangles things, but gives a different result than either Google or Bing so it's obviously not based on either. Three different mangled translations (along with context) gives you more information than two. The language selection is still limited so it wouldn't have helped with this film. Most of the time it would come in handy though. Thanks for bringing the site to my attention. :)
