Maybe a clip from the movie here...The principal character in Helvécio Ratton's delightful film has been adapted from a book and comic created by the Brazilian cartoonist Ziraldo, and tells the tale of a happy-go-lucky 10-year-old child growing up in a city in the 60s.

Yeah! The series title was Um Menino Muito Maluquinho and it had 26 episodes (March 19 to July 10, 2006). The main child actress was Sarah Maciel who played Julieta, the friend the protagonist fell in love with when he was 10 years old. There were other girls. I'm hoping that someday this series will be remastered. Unfortunately, I don't even have it in low quality.
Thanks for all the info, thought it was earlier to be honest (my timeline of what I saw matches late 90's), but I hope so too! 
Wow! When I looked for a TV series I easily found mention of the earlier German-dubbed version, but I had no idea there was a "remake" series many years later. Maybe someone can find that.
