I was thinking that Klava and her daughter Lyusya essentially "adopted" an orphaned young boy, not understanding that his parent was in the picture too!

Klava's husband died in front
Because there was trouble with housing Klava gave shelter to Aigul and Aigul's son
The first and second parts were clear enough. It is the third that was the problem! I think your point about the imperfection of Russian-to-English machine translation has been proven.
Google wrote:Son Aigul, the main character, who has now become a pilot, recalls his childhood in a small Kazakh town, which fell on a difficult post-war period.
Is the young boy, now a pilot, ALSO called Aigul, or is he just the son of Aigul with a name they will not tell us?

It is the relationship between the young boy and the young girl that seems interesting to me. I think he could easily have "unforgettable memories" about her!

Anyway, try this translation:
"Klava, who lost her husband at the front, lives with her 12-year-old daughter Lyusya. They sheltered Aigul and her seven-year-old son in their house."
and
"The story is told through the son's eyes. Now a pilot as an adult, he recalls his childhood in a small Kazkh town during the difficult post-war period."

I am sure the original Russian is much more lyrical.

OK, NOW I finally understand! I downloaded the video and Russian subtitle and machine-translated it, and then scrolled through the movie. I still have not figured out what the name of the boy is, but Aigul is the name of his MAMA! I had her sex totally wrong and thought "Aigul" was his PAPA! I just was not familiar with the name "Aigul". When her friend Klava affectionately called her "Gulya", I recognized that as a woman's name. Goodness, the story makes more sense now: two mothers living together with their children. I thought a widow and her daughter taking in a MAN and his son sounded unlikely, unless they got married. I just needed to get it straight in my head that Aigul was a woman.

I went back and edited out the worst of the lamebrained stupidities from my posts, but I can understand why you must have been bewildered by my total lack of understanding!
