The story of this visually magnificent film is set at a strongly male-dominated island community in the year 1885. Here live Vilde (played by Løkkeberg herself) and her ten-year-old daughter who is the result of incest, Vilde's relationship with her own stepfather. The child is mute and pushed away from society, and Vilde experiences inhumane pressure.

Hud sparked debate, among other things, because it so explicitly deals with incest, and received a harsh response from the contemporary critics - the fire was directed at the film's large budget, Løkkeberg's provocative character, and the casting of her own daughter. At the same time, it was selected for the "Un certain regard" program in Cannes.
