'Twilight Time'' is a halfway foreign film, which means that it's set in a distant land (Yugoslavia) and populated by some local extras but chiefly written and directed in a conventionally mawkish style that is universal. It's a curious hybrid, and at unexpected moments a gentle and touching one, particularly whenever Yugoslav-born Karl Malden has an opportunity to make the most of his role.

Mr. Malden plays Marko, an elderly grandfather raising two young children who, though the children don't know this, have been abandoned by their parents. Like his son and daughter-in-law, who have moved from the small village in which the film takes place to Germany, Marko had his chance to see the world. He lived in America for 20 years, and his favorite song was the ballroom number of the title; he even won a gramophone in a dance contest back then. But Marko has returned to the village, even if his son has sent a letter declaring his intention to stay away. Marko can't bear to read the real letter to his grandchildren, Ivan and Ana, so he writes a substitute. ''Money is important but it is not everything in life,'' Marko's letter says. ''When you live abroad you soon realize there is no place like home among your own people.''
