Synopsis
In 1967 the little Johanna lives with her mother Katharina in the Upper Austrian town of Wels. There she grows up with the Catholic values that her mother gives her. So both are careful not to attract attention within their community and to visit the church regularly where Pastor Angerer holds the fairs. Soon, the bright girl realizes that there is something different about her. The pastor is also the one who tells Johanna that she has Jewish roots - in fact she is half Jewish. However, especially in the Austrian province, this is sensitive news, the population is still permeated by resentments of the Nazi era. She shares the secret with her blind grandmother, which tell her which of the parishioners were once hot-blooded followers of National Socialism. Johanna now slowly begins to understand the implications of their origin and goes on the offensive. From now on, she calls herself only "Hanna" and presents her origin in public with pride. Hanna begins to do exactly what her mother so urgently wanted to prevent: she wakes the "sleeping dogs". Because among the ostensibly pious Catholics there is still a whole series of Nazis who have learned nothing from everything.
