Okja (2017)

(This movie has been mentioned here, I'm pretty sure. I don't know if it was in ART's MegaPost or somewhere else, but doing a search comes up with nada... :think)

Synopsis:
For 10 idyllic years, young Mija (An Seo Hyun) has been caretaker and constant companion to Okja-a massive animal and an even bigger friend-at her home in the mountains of South Korea. But that changes when a family-owned multinational conglomerate Mirando Corporation takes Okja for themselves and transports her to New York, where image obsessed and self-promoting CEO Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton) has big plans for Mija's dearest friend. With no particular plan but single-minded in intent, Mija sets out on a rescue mission, but her already daunting journey quickly becomes more complicated when she crosses paths with disparate groups of capitalists, demonstrators and consumers, each battling to control the fate of Okja...while all Mija wants to do is bring her friend home.

Like American Fable and I kill Giants; this movie is a tad hard to classify.

When I saw the ads for it, it seemed to be marketed as a 'Family' film, which it most definitely is not. My best way to genre-ize it is to call it a VERY dark satire of 'Family' films.

The main actress, Seohyun An was [imo] fantastic as Mija. She was 13 when the film was released [Born Jan.,2004], so she was probably 12, maybe late 11 when it was being filmed.. :heart :heart :heart

Not only was the role an emotional roller coaster for her character, but it was pretty damn physically demanding also. Wanting only to protect her only friend Okja, Mija goes from the lush hills of South Korea to the animal slaughterhouse bowels of New York; enduring some pretty horrific trials on her adventure.

I was captivated by Mija pretty much from the get-go [I have a thing for Asian girls..]; cringing when she was in danger, and rooting for her when she was racing for freedom with Okja..

And Okja... It's absolutely AMAZING how seamlessly they can incorporate and blend CGI animation with real actors these days. Okja appeared about as real as you can make 'nothing' appear. And the interactions between her and Mija.. Amazing..

The biggest con for me was the fact that there was so much unnecessary language [and it was always the F*bomb.. :wall ] and the creepy aspects of the corporate characters, [ESPECIALLY Jake Gyllenhaal as Johnny Wilcox] made the movie totally unsuitable for showing to children [in an educational environment..]. BUT for FLM'ers: It's a gem!!! :thumbsup

Other than that I really liked this movie, despite some tedious moments..
