isn't there software that takes a clean image from another video (like one that is 720p) and uses it to recalculate what the 1080p version ought to look like without the watermark? Or am I imagining this

Do you mean replacing the watermark with an cutout with no watermark? Theoretically it would be possible, but you have place it 100% in the correct position which would be very different. I never did it.

I am sorry you rented it and THEN found it had hardburned subtitles! Odd that a Dutch-language site would hardburn them rather than make them optional. They seem to be catering solely to the Dutch hearing-impaired in that case. Or is "Muidhond" made in a dialect with a minority of speakers, and they assume that most would need the subtitles to understand it?

I have really no idea, why they did it this way. It was only 3 euros, so it didn't hurt me much.

It is possible to de-logo and remove the hard subs if you have two video sources that have the same frame rate, since the logo is at the top and the subtitles at the bottom.

Yes, this would be possible, but a lot of work. The 2 videos have to run exactly in sync. As I said: My upscale looks fine to me.

Thank you for renting it for us, ghost! I have found myself pretty stingy when renting stream movies, but I am glad the service is offered, so I still really appreciate it.
