subtitle question

Post by popdrome »   0 likes

if this question has been asked before, I'm sorry, couldn't find it, but
Is there a way to convert vobsub or idx/sub files to .srt ?

On my Mac I think there isn't, but there might be a solution on PC.
It would make life so much easier ;)

I have a .mp4 file that contains subs (embedded) in the vobsub format, and I have totally no clue (yet the desire) how to extract those.
If that's even possible?

if someone could enlighten me that'd be awesome

Subtitle Edit.

You can Import/OCR from DVD, blu-ray, Divx/AVI, and sub/idx. (This is in addition to the billion other things Subtitle Edit does.)

I have actually done it with the sub/idx and I THINK I have done it with VOB/IFO (DVD) files. It works, with some effort.

It is PC-only and there are online tutorials. For Mac, a good option might be Aegisub. I have never used that one however.

If you have never OCRd before, oh boy are you in for a lot of fun! {sarcasm}

I think I have used Andrej1984's subtitletools link, but I don't remember my experience with it.

Yes, I also would recommand Subtitle Edit.

You can even use it online: https://nikse.dk/SubtitleEdit/Online

Yay! Thanks Andrej, Night and ghost for your suggestions! I'll try all of your suggestions. Yes Night I've used OCR before, many years ago, for my work. I know it can be tricky. But honestly I didn't even know this involves OCR.

So yeah, thanks for the tips and I'll keep you updated on how this will work out. :icon_mf_type

SUB+IDX / VOBSUB files are images rather than plain text, so that is why OCR is needed. That is, unless you just want to let it run fully automated and live with the errors! I have done that when all I wanted was the timecodes, and I filled in ALL the text manually.

As long as you have experience with OCR you know what you are getting into, so I'm not worried.
