Workers' quarter of a German town in 1934. In the yard the children play, instead of robbers and policemen, unemployed and policemen. For six-year-old Peter, the game becomes bitterly serious. His father is arrested, he himself is avoided by the house inhabitants as a communist son. He hopes that his father can escape and builds a hiding place for him in the apartment. The hiding place will one day save the life of another communist who is being persecuted. During the action, Peter's loyal dog Klecks is shot by the police. The boy and his mother can't go back to the apartment. Comrades of the father hide them and help them to escape.
