In 1999 the music producer Ivan Nikolayevich Shapovalov organized a casting in Moscow to find a suitable singer for his project. From the 500 applicants, the then 14-year-old Katina was selected and after the production of the first demo recordings, Schapovalow decided to form a duo. He chose Volkova, who was also 14 at the time, as the second singer. The image of the new duo was given: they should be lolitas, with lesbian tendencies, who attract attention because they sometimes undress during their concerts.
