Open up the file with G-spot
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/v26x/quick_start.html
That will tell you what audo codec you might be missing.
I usually try and play the file with VLC before I check for missing codecs.

Thank you ghost and DreamScape!
"Boys Alone" streaming here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCePbRdQmbE
I have not watched either yet, but there are frustratingly limited subtitles available at YouTube. I suspect there will be much mumbly incomprehensible whiny childish talk that I would prefer to have subtitles for. (EDIT: quick check, I was right. They are speaking English, right?) The subs seemed to be mostly for the pompous adult narrator, who I would prefer remain silent, but they are not complete even for him.
I have not yet found a working streaming link for "Boys and Girls Alone". Thread here, with a direct-download ulozto link: viewtopic.php?t=5136
I wonder how much these documentaries address the effect of an ADULT CAMERA CREW following and watching the children. It is well known that so-called "reality" TV is completely UNreal and that people perform for the camera in ways they would never do if the camera is not there. I suspect children are much the same. Even back at the turn of the millennium they were pretty technically and camera savvy.
But with adult presence or not, I think y'all can predict the relative difference in behaviour between the girls and the boys. "Lord of the Flies", anyone?

I would have liked something like a Big Brother type version the cameras are hidden they keep going at all times even nothing is out of reach so I would have liked Girls Alone.
