Im also still not entirely sure if the forum here is the right place for me (some users seem to focus on things I’m not comfortable with)
Please forgive my rambling reply ...
If I understand your question right, you do need to have ports
open just for eMule or nothing will download or upload, but you do not necessarily have to do port-forwarding.
I am probably going to jinx myself by saying this, but as far as I know I have never had a problem with viruses and trojans etc with emule. (Of course I could be part of some massive botnet and the bots aren't going to tell me if I am.) Just as with any other site online, continue using whatever your usual computer defense is. In your emule client, ONLY SHARE SPECIFIC FOLDERS.
DO NOT SHARE YOUR ENTIRE COMPUTER!!!! There are specific folders where I keep movies and nothing else. DO NOT share your entire C: drive!
I only use Windows Defender and do the occasional scan. It has been years since malware was flagged and that was before I even started using emule, and those questionable files were easily quarantined and eliminated anyway. I can appreciate sensible precautions. If you do emule searches with certain keywords, you CAN find pretty foul material. It is really simple: don't download it if an innocent search turns up something suspicious. Or only download emule files that other FLM members have verified. And you are responsible for being aware of the laws in your home country. For example, there are Marvel superhero movies that have to be edited before release in China but are uncontroversial in much of the rest of the world.
If you have not already, check out the POSTING GUIDELINES to see if they are in line with your interests:

FLM does
not permit porn and the standard is that all films are accepted as mainstream releases in their countries of origin. Of course there is room for so-called "controversial" films that may very well raise eyebrows elsewhere, and a couple films might be questionable. In a very few cases I or the Admins have said, "NO, this movie is not welcome here."
As for members with differing tastes -- there are films that I am not interested in at all so I don't download them. (I get really enthusiastic about Pippi Longstocking and other Astrid Lindgren stories but I don't expect everyone to like what I like.) Almost all of our RELeases have IMDB links or at least some other movie site link, so it is not too hard to find more information on a movie beyond what is posted here. FLM members are supposed to verify their files before RELease to be certain that it IS what it claims to be. If someone finds a link that COULD be the right movie, they should indicate that they do not have it themselves and other members can decide if they want to "risk" downloading it themselves. The risk is low. If you download a file called Spider-Man.2002.mkv then it will be a superhero movie.
Of course if your interests are elsewhere, we wish you well! You don't have to justify yourself and we do not ask anyone else to justify themselves either. You are welcome to come back and visit anytime.
