Anne Trister follows director Léa Pool's route in life from youth in French speaking Switzerland to adulthood in Quebec in Canada. The film deals with issues of child abuse and bi-sexuality as well as the quest to find roots.

Art student Anne Trister has, like Lea Pool, a Jewish father and a gentile mother. Her father's death is what moves her to leave school and her lover in Switzerland behind and travel to Montreal in Canada for the last rites.

She stays with an older friend Alix, a child psychiatrist absorbed by the case of an abused little girl. Alix tries to help Anne to relate to her Jewish roots by telling her about a trip to the desert she once made. Anne is fascinated by the story and by Alix and falls in love with her.

In the meantime she expresses her feelings in art by creating a fantastic mural of the desert on the walls of a studio lent to her by one of her father's old friends.

However, Alix chooses for a man in her life and disturbed by her rejection Anne falls from scaffolding in her studio. When she comes to in hospital her studio and with it her dream world has been torn down. Now she must face reality and be free.

In the closing shots Alix receives a parcel containing a handful of sand and a short film of Anne in the desert.

The soundtrack prominently features a chanson by Danielle Messiah (De la main gauche) that lends the film much of its mood.

Not sure if this is just cut version or very low quality but here is only source I have found :-

Just watched this movie... (For plot details, billanben's post above covers it pretty much completely [including the END!, lol].)

Very interesting, though slow moving with some VERY talky moments and other long drawn out silent, moody scenes. (I think the movie was filmed in French, but it's been dubbed in German.) The basic premise and plotline is easy to follow, and there's 5 or 6 nice scenes dealing with the interaction of the Psychiatrist and the abused girl... The devil is in the 'details', however:

Though you realize there's a problem with the young girl that the Psychiatrist is working with, the details of 'abuse' are lost due to the language barrier... (As well as exactly how the girl 'comes to grips' with the abuse.)

THAT'S the young girl that's being treated in the last picture. Worth a look-see. ;)

LOL! (Go ahead: Pretend that you're ARTHORIUS [when he FIRST started on FLM] and ask the question the RIGHT way: "Does she get NAKED?") :icon_1roflmao

Only with the lady playing 'Anne Trister's' character. There's some nice scenes of her with her lovers AND a bath scene (almost 2). And if you SQUINT REAL HARD on the darker scenes, she ALMOST looks UNDER 14yo! lol

As far as the abused child is concerned; other than billanben's write up, it's hard to even tell if she's a girl or not: She has a 'Scott Baio' [ ;) ] look about her and she's ALWAYS in jeans and a t-shirt; not even a single dress the whole time... :(

kev.

"Can't find subs, though." It means the whole film is in French? German?
