In the competition there are 11 feature-length and 14 short-length entries. From France there are indeed two productions with prominent casts: In the opening film KID POWER, Sandrine Bonnaire takes on the role of a mother. The comedy tells the story of three desperate parent couples who are being tyrannized by their children. Julie Depardieu, daughter of Gérard Depardieu, plays in BLAME IT ON FIDEL (La faute à Fidel, 2006) the mother of nine year-old Anna, whose life gets scrambled up when her parents suddenly get engaged in issues of the Third World.
Among others, LUCAS is also presenting the Portuguese film BEHIND THE CLOUDS (Atrás das Nuvens, 2006), the Argentinian contribution Hairy Tooth Fairy (El Ratón Pérez, 2006) and A GIRL THIRTEEN (Shi San Sui, 2006) from China. The Indian documentary film WORKING FOR A LIVING (Quamer 2007) reports in an impressive way on the difficult life of a young girl in India. In four short-film programs for the ages six to eight there are among others the Icelandic ANNA AND THE MOODS (Anna og skapsveiflurnar, 2006), the Palestinian MAKE A WISH (Itamanna, 2006) and the Iranian FLYING GRANDMA (madarbozorg parandeh, 2006).
Competition entries will be shown as usual at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. as well as at 2:00 p.m. and for the first time at 4:00 p.m. in our new program time block. During the Sunday matinee on the 30th of September at 11:00 a.m. one can see the competition entry from Finland Onni von sopanen (2006). As in previous years, one LUCAS film shall be screened accompanied by a sign language translator for audio-impaired audiences.
Classics and Rarities
Ten classics and rarities chosen out of LUCAS‘ long festival history can now be (re-)discovered by audiences. Among these is the adventure film RIVER TRIP WITH HEN (Flussfahrt mit Huhn, FRG 1983), the animation film THE HUNCHBACK HORS (Konjuk Gorbunok, USSR 1975) and Lasse Hallström‘s world hit MY LIFE AS A DOG (Mitt liv som hund, Sweden 1987). From Canada, the LUCAS award-winning film HENRY AND VERLIN (1994) shall also be shown. The Classics and Rarities are to be shown correspondingly at 6:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
