So, there's this cute little girl, who at the age of 5 is being hailed as an artistic genius and has sold $300,000 worth of abstract paintings. Very Cool!
But then the mean old US investigative TV show '60 Minutes' profiles her, and has art experts say no way Daddy didn't actually do some of the work, the paintings are too polished.

IMDB Comment:
I liked the early part of this film more, since it focused more on cute 5-year-old Marla and not as much on the controversy of who actually did the painting. I think the director inserted himself into the film too much, questioning whether it was actually Marla's work, in part just because he thought it would make his movie better. He does talk about abstract art, the idea that quality abstract painting is partly in the mind of the beholder, the story behind the artist has as much to do with its reception as the objective art does.It has been said that we all have some sort of creative spark within us. This is surely the case of four year old Marla Olmstead, who has made a name for herself at her young age by painting abstracts that smack of Jackson Pollock. Her approach to creative art is just another form of having childish fun. Others around her (including her parents) touted her as the next big thing, and for awhile,is indeed the next big thing, until a report on Sixty Minutes threatens to bring it all to a screeching halt. What ensues is an emotional/political battle for the Olmsteads to clear their name. What it all boils down to is, is it art, or is it all just hype?
Even with that, I enjoyed the film, Marla's cute and the very idea of such a young girl possibly being a genius is so cool
Marla is about 8 now, her web site at http://www.marlaolmstead.com still has paintings for sale as well as a gallery of her art. The hype around her has died down, it will be interesting to see if she re-emerges as an adolescent, if she really has the spark.
