First, Last and Deposit (2000)

Synopsis
13-year-old Tessa and her mother Christine move from Arizona to California, hoping to find a better life. But Christine is barely able to make ends meet on her meager paycheck and the family is evicted. Living out of their car, they lose even that when the car is stolen. As poverty leads to desperation, Christine is pushed to crime and Tessa tries to run away. But in the end, despite the circumstances, the mother and daughter manage to keep their relationship strong.

This little film plays like a documentary, about a single mom and her adolescent daughter in Santa Barbara. Theirs is a gypsy life going from eviction to living in their car. A tough life and not one to be desired. I understand the guy who made it did it all on a computer. You won't mistake this for Titantic, but the in your face realism makes this a diamond in the rough and leaves you wondering about the fate of this desperate mom and her touching little girl.

SUNNOVAGUNN!!!! :eyecrazy

Just when I think we've tapped out FLM movies from the past [ESPECIALLY in the USA], someone digs up a movie like this!!!

Many thanks starfish; this looks pretty enticing.. 13 years old is a VERY conflicting time in a girls life. Looking forward to this one.

Just as info for those who may not understand where the title came from, in the U.S. when you rent an apartment or a house, the owners want the first month's rent, the last month's rent, and money on deposit (typically another month's rent) in case there's any damage done to the property while you live there. That means for an apartment that costs $500 a month you must pay $1500 before you even move in, and you only get the $500 damage deposit back when you move out if there's been NO damage - the owner will often claim there's been some just so he can keep that money. You can see you must have quite a lot of money before you can rent some place to live.

LOL!!

Didn't think about the title being such an American colloquialism that needed to be explained.. :icon_biggrin2

Great job breaking it down, phuzzy!! :thumbsup

(AND again, thanks for bringing this here starfish..)

Thanks for bringing this here. I've seen it a couple times on Netflix streaming but could never find a downloadable source. It's really a nice little movie. The girl is super cute and has lots of screentime. If you don't mind really low budget movies, then you will love it.
