My download completed a few days ago so I guess yours has also. However, that version is NOT actually uncropped. It has black bars at the top and bottom to give it the apparent 1.361 Aspect Ratio. The image seen is actually 1.78.

I found a 720p 1.78 version from SOMEONE on emule, and it just looks so much better. Check out the top, bottom, left, and right space in the pictures and see they are the same --

First picture, the old omg file.
Second picture, the new 720p file.

This movie is all new to me but it looks like fun. Thank you to Mr. Anonymous!

SOMEONE
LOL.

...I did my upscale from the cropped version. Seems that I missed the uncropped one.

No! Don't misunderstand my post. The version at FLM that SAYS it is uncropped is NOT uncropped. Don't bother with it!

Now, if you can find a version expanded to open matte full-frame (such as a 1.33 DVD release) on Usenet or somewhere else then knock yourself out. I did not do any looking beyond FLM and eMule.

Yes, please, thank you, you can stop! For once I would like a chance to actually watch one of your upgrades before you upgrade it again!

Inconclusive searching and aspect ratio tech:
Spoiler:

I did a general look-around and I only found evidence of a VHS for home media, not a DVD. (That does not mean there was not a DVD, just that I could not find info on one.) I did not specifically look for streaming versions, but apparently it was streaming once at the Austrian site flimmit.at.

The theatrical aspect ratio was 1.66:

This means it was matted a little at the top and bottom from the OCN. The 1.78 version we see would be matted just a little sliver more.

The VHS was probably full-frame as was typical. Whether they opened it up to the OCN size or further cropped the 1.66 presentation on the left and right, I don't know.

If it is opened up, how about a 1080p upscale of the original VHS?

As soon as I logged out of FLM, I made sure to hurry and watch this one before it was too late.

Some of those screenshots in the first post make much more sense to me now, and there were parts that gave me some good laughs.

Silvester graciously offers little Katharina some delicious cold headcheese and beer for her evening meal.

But she is unenthusiastic about that and instead chooses bread with honey, and milk to drink.

However, this little boy later on appreciates his beer.

:huh

cropped = black bars (or more) removed
uncropped = image NOT cropped, i.e. black bars NOT removed

Sorry, my definition of cropping has always referred to the image of the movie, not the video container. Maybe I was confusing that with "unmatted"! Anyway, I will not get excited about downloading the black bars when the image remains the same, because I am looking to watch the movie image and not the bars around it. The only purpose of black bars is to retain the image aspect ratio in older media formats like non-anamorphic DVD. Modern encoding and VLC eliminates that need.

Whatever anyone's defnition of "cropping", however, the movie image is apparently NOT currently available in 4:3 open matte.
